Being under average, I am used to this but call it out every time I hear it. This happened at work again, but this conversation was unbelievable and between four women.
Woman 1: "I can't stand when guys lie about their height saying they're 6 ft when they're actually like 5'11 or 5'10
Woman 2: "Ooooh yes, f**ing a**holes. I hated that when I was single. Thank god my hubby is an actual 6 ft. It's so amazing!
Woman 3: "I hate short men especially the really insecure ones. Like please, you're not 6ft dude, you're a 5'11 mini man. I had a date where this guy lied about his height, said he was 6'2 and was really like 5'11. Ugh"
These women were like 4/10 which made it even more frustrating. Don't the have mirrors? Frustrating that women who aren't conventionally attractive believe they are entitled to the "best of the best". Like I said, I'm used to it, but I was in the area and not in the actual conversation, so I didn't put my 2 cents in. Just proof on how obsessed society is with height.
This study was done by the University Of Edinburgh and says they can determine with accuracy the height of their long term partners. It also says this desire is genetic. Interesting that according to this research, both women and men prefer partners of similar height. This goes the anecdotal evidence presented by short men and women in forums and social discussion.
TL:DR - Americans aren't getting taller, but this idea that we are is about circumstance and location. Here in Brooklyn there are plenty of short white guys. They outnumber the tall easily.
I completely believe this. Here on Wall Street, the vast majority of Stockbrokers are at or above 6 feet. There are short ones but they are vastly outnumbered. In a lot of white collar jobs I see the same thing. Here is the thing though. I believe that the sexual selection and heightism intercept in the business world.
When I walk through New York, there are PLENTY of short men everywhere, but they are not working the top jobs. There is a weak correlation between height and intelligence, but I believe that employers are selecting for height as women are in dating. People just don't talk about this stuff.
A good example is this 90s documentary where this employer is candid about hiring a good looking tall man for his company
