Can we blame educators for perpetuating heightism?
I witnessed something very interesting in the classroom yesterday afternoon. I co-teach with this female educator, let's call her Nancy. During a lesson on the book "To Kill A Mockingbird", we staged a reenactment of one of the scenes from the reading via reinterpretation. We allowed the kids to draf a more "modern" script using more relevant present day scenarios. We allowed the kids to use props, but they were limited to items in the classroom. Anyway, there were three kids in a group, all Middle School students. Two of the boys in this group were relatively tall for their age (about 5'9), the other 5'2-5'3. All of the kids in the group asked for an item that wasn't in the room, but downstairs in the auditorium. The smallest kid asked to go retrieve it. My co-teacher ignored the shorter student's request and sent both of the taller students to get the item. The thing is I knew she did this because she imagined the taller students to be more capable, even though the shorter student articulated clearly from a point of knowledge that he knew what he would have to do. This was confirmed when I confronted her about it. This has me wondering. Do we reinforce heightism from young age? |

1 1/2 inch heel or sole max
If you're going to wear boots to add height, try to go no more than a 1.5 inches. I have a bunch of cowboy boots, chukka boots and shoes with that at max. You can still pull stuff like that off and look stylish. Anything more is ridiculous outside of elevators. |

Do women really face heightism though?....
I've read posts on other forums where women claim to be offended when they are picked up, pat on the head and aren't taken seriously professionally, but in all my years on this earth, I have NEVER seen a woman picked up without being asked to (at work? from a stranger?) or pat on the head. If anything, men go crazy over short women and I see far more short women in positions of a authority (store manager for example) than I do men who are of a similar stature. So tell me, where do women have it as bad as short men when it comes to heightism? |

What are the chances of short becoming a future fad?
You see this happening? Everyone is getting taller, so being short would be kind of novelty. Everyone has brown hair and a smaller percentage of the population has blue eyes, so everyone goes crazy over blue eyes. With less men "short", do you see any chance of shorter guys being viewed in the same way blue eyes are?... as in a favorable trait? |

Heightism has to be based in sexism
We assign tall to men, and short/weak to women. Women fight for equality, but still want to stand behind a big tall muscular man to "feel protected". What is the reasoning behind this? How can a woman champion feminist causes but still be anti-short man (professionally, when it comes to giving respect and romantic choices)? Short women are considered "cute, petite and sexy", while tall women are "gorgeous models". Both short and tall women are treated with respect and protected socially, while shorter men are seen as a perpetual joke. I'm surprised that you guys don't discuss this idea of "reverse sexism" more. |

Hey everyone, new member here
Just joined today and wanted to say hello. Never thought about looking for a community of other short people before. Pretty amazed I never thought about it before considering I've been 5'3 since high school. Anyways, glad I found this site and Happy New Year everyone. |

Does your partner/significant other catch flak for dating you?
I'm just shy of 5'4 and can tell you that whenever my girlfriend's tells me often that when she discloses my height (usually when somebody asks), they are met with disbelief and then questioning ensues. My girlfriend is the same height as me. |

What is life like in the working world for short men?
I am in my second year of university and top out at 5'5. While I have few complains about my dating life, between reading this forum and watching TV where jokes are always done a short man's expense, I worry a little bit about what may become of me once I graduate and enter the work force. My area of study is marketing, so I will be in the business world. There is a study which is popular here that refers to taller men making more money and being taken more seriously. In my internship, most men are much taller than I and women wear heels. Same when I go to mixers. I'm beginning to worry that my height will affect how I am perceived as in I'll be disqualified and not considered a serious candidate by anyone. On that note, what is your experience as a short male in the workplace? TL:DR - About to graduate university and enter the workforce. Worried that being short will make my experience difficult. Do you have any stories about how your height as affected you in the workplace? |

Ever not able to defend yourself or someone because of your size?
Like anyone say anything disrespectful to you or push you into a fight and you think to yourself that you couldn't win or know off the bat that you don't stand a chance? Or are there short men here who are confident that they can defend themselves and never worry about physical assault? |
