Lifting weights
post #1

Hi everyone,
I've been muscular (when younger) and skinny (now), and I noticed a big difference in how people treat me. When I lifted weights a lot I was always being challenged in some way by taller guys. From arm wrestling, to fights, to just getting grabby. It was like they couldn't handle someone shorter being stronger than them, and they had something to prove. This was especially true if they had been drinking. Now that I am skinnier I don't have this problem because they know they are probably stronger than me. I wanted to start lifting weights again, but I don't want to deal with the insecurities of some taller guys especially now that I am out of school and working. Anyone else deal with a similar problem? How did you handle it? I like the look of a muscular physique and women seemed to like it too.

This is where biology comes into play and your observations are not unfounded. I too noticed in my weight lifting days, I would get "challenged" or "side-eyed" by taller men. I wouldn't call it intimidation, but more so "stepping on their turf". Us shorter men regularly get accused of being "insecure", but most of the time, it's usually others being insecure. The "stepping on their turf' equates to also stepping out of our lane.

Weightlifting won't make me shorter right?

Will intense weightlifting make me look "shorter" because of the added bulk? I've heard girls say that short guys who lift weights are overcompensating and a friend of mine who is 5'5 lifts weight has bulk and people call him "bulldog". Which body type compliments us more? Short/Skinny or Short/Muscular?

Can weight lifting stunt growth?

My friend' younger brother is a lot shorter than he is, and short than their father as well. He is the same height as their mom actually. He started body building when he was 14 so I am curious if this can happen?
