Drink milk so you can be strong like your father.

I heard this all of my life growing up from my parents and nothing happened. In school I would bother the lunch lady for more milk cartons, ate lots of dairy products and played soccer. Well, nothing happened. No growth spurt. When will they stop telling this lie to kids?

TL;DR Santa, the toothfairy and this are the 3 biggest lies parents tell their children. sad

You can thank the media for this one. I think it was the Milk commercials that were out in the 80s. You can see them on youtube. The people who say it are simple. If your DNA says you're going to be short, you're going to be short.

I think it's very important that parent's pay attention to giving their kids proper nutrition, making sure they engage in lots of physical activity to stay fit and having them go for regular health checkups. Outside of that, it is a major error on behalf of the parents to suggest anything about what they should expect to be when they grow up outside of anything that is out of their control.

For example, to say, "You can be a doctor if you study hard" is one thing. But to say something like, "you will be 6'2", or telling a young girl, "you'll be just as curvy as your mom" does a disservice to the child and can cause resentment if they don't "achieve" the ascertaining of those physical traits.

What is your choice drink right now?

Far from an alcoholic, but I do enjoy a glass of wine or spirit from time to time for the sake of trying something new or to take off some of the edge when out and about, but I limit intake.

I do have a wine collection, but just for the sake of collecting also. If I have company, I may crack one open.

For me at the moment, I just tried Bailey's coquito, which is a sin because I could get or make some homemade coquito in a cinch. I just wanted to try it. It's actually not bad!

The myth of drinking milk

Can anyone come up with any of the other myths that exist as a "means of getting taller". And by myth, I don't mean snake oil. I mean conventional supposed healthy eating habits during childhood that are supposed to make you grow taller. I have friends who drank nothing but soda, sugary drinks and ate junk who all ended up well above 6 feet.

As a kid, I drank milk constantly (parents made sure I did), ate lots of meats, drank glasses of water a day, played sports and got lots of sleep. When I chatted with friends in the past, they swore up and down and that I just didn't eat healthy enough as a child. To make matters worse, I remember an event where a friend of the family told her son to drink milk so he didn't end up like me. It made him change his picky eating habits immediately. It didn't occur to them that they're instilling the idea that shortness is a negative virtue.

Anyway, what are some of the myths that we're told to do in order to get taller?

Strong inverse association between male height and suicide

A 2005 Swedish study followed a large cohort of men from age 18-49 and noticed a 9% decrease in suicide risk for every 5cm (2 inch) increment in height.
