Tie Guide For Shorter Men

A tie is an incredible addition to a man's wardrobe, giving a touch of sophistication and style to his attire. However, being a short man, you might avoid wearing ties due to perceived styling challenges. Not anymore! This article is your complete tie guide for shorter men, offering insights into the right length, styling, and matching so your wardrobe nightmare turns into an iconic statement. So, let's start!

DIFFERENT KINDS OF TIES

Across different cultures, occasions, and formalities, there are several styles you can pick from, such as:

Skinny

The first option on the list of the tie guide for shorter men is a skinny tie, which is narrower than a traditional narrow tie. It is typically measured at 2 inches or less in width and is often associated with a modern look. Skinny ties were quite popular in the 1950s and 1960s and go well with a high-hemmed, slim-fit suit with narrow lapels.

Slim

A slim necktie has a width ranging from 2.75 to 3 inches and is quite popular among the younger generation. Back in the 60s, many popular musicians, including The Beatles, wore slim-fit black suits and thin white ties. However, nowadays, shorter men usually style such ties with a blazer and chinos or jeans.

Regular

Typically, a regular tie, also known as a standard or traditional necktie, measures between 3.25 and 3.5 inches wide and around 57 inches long. It comes in a variety of materials, including silk and wool, and you can wear it to any occasion, whether it's a wedding or some corporate event.

Wide

A wide tie, as the name implies, is one that is wider than the standard tie width of 3.5 inches. It gives off a classic look but suits only those with heavy and broad body frames. So, make sure to consider the body type and width of your jacket's lapels before opting for this type of necktie.

TIES AND OUTFIT CONVENTIONS

Well, pairing a solid shirt and a solid necktie is a safe bet and an easy decision. The real struggle arises when you've to pick the right pattern necktie for your patterned shirt without overwhelming the whole look. But don't stress out; here's an overview of the different types of tie patterns and how you can make wise outfit choices:

  • Floral Tie Patterns: Floral tie patterns feature various flower designs on the tie fabric, ranging from small, aesthetic, scattered flowers to large, more prominent motifs. As a short man, when you opt for a floral, it adds a unique flair and color to your whole personality. We suggest matching it with a solid shirt, particularly pastels, to avoid clashes and create a lovely and cohesive look.
  • Striped Tie Patterns: Striped tie patterns consist of alternating strips, which can be thin or thick and may vary in color. It's suggested to wear a striped tie with a solid shirt, but if you're a daring short man, you can match stripes with a striped shirt as long as they are spaced differently to minimize a color and design clash. Also, to style a striped tie, choose a knot that doesn't obscure the pattern, such as the half-windsor.

You can also give solid pattern ties a try if you want to create a subtle yet statement look. Pair it with a double-breasted suit that either complements the tie or contrasts with it so you appear classy without looking like you're trying too hard.

TIE AND SIZE

The tie guide for shorter men also has some requirements for the tie size and length. Ideally, the tip of the tie should end somewhere between the top and bottom of your belt. To give you an accurate idea, opt for ties that have a length ranging from 57 inches to 58 inches; other options will be too long, ruining your whole look.

How To Tie A Tie?

So now that you know the basics of the tie guide for shorter men, including the types of ties, patterns, and sizes, let's look at how you can tie a tie

Windsor Knot

  1. Raise the collar of the shirt and then drape the tie in such a way around the neck that the wide end is in the right direction and extends about 12 inches below the narrow end.
  2. Now, cross the wide part carefully over the narrow part. Pull the wide end through the opening at the neck and then down.
  3. Pass the wide part underneath and to the right of the narrow part, with the wrong side facing out first.
  4. Now, cross the wide part over and to the left of the narrow part of the tie with the correct side or part facing out.
  5. Next, pull the wide end up through the opening at the neck, and when bringing it down, pass it through the loop at the front. That's all.

Half-Windsor Knot

  • Place the tie around your neck with a wide end on the right and a skinny or narrow end on the left. Make sure to position the wide end lower than the skinny end.
  • Cross the wide end right over the skinny end in the left direction.
  • Cross it underneath the skinny end in the right direction.
  • Fold it up all the way through the neck loop, and then pass it down to the left side.
  • Next, cross it over the skinny side and in the right direction.
  • Carefully fold it up through the loop of the neck from underneath, and then pass it down through the loop that you've made in the knot.
  • Now, pull down on the wide end to tie the knot, and then slide it up towards your neck.

Four-In-Hand Knot

  • Place the tie around your neck, the wider side on your left, and it should hang just a little above your belly button.
  • Pull the wide end over and in the right direction.
  • Now, pull the wide end under and in the left direction, creating the X pattern.
  • Pull the wide end over and underneath again to create another X.
  • Now, pull the wide end up through the loop around the neck and then down through the loop you've just created at the front.
  • Hold the narrow end and slide the knot up to get the desired look.

EXAMPLE OUTFITS

From the tie guide for shorter men, here are some outfit inspirations to give a try:

  • Formal Suit - If you want something dark for professional business meetings, then this Charcoal Gray Suit with Mint Tie is the ideal attire.
  • For a clean, stylish look, a short man can try this look by combining a Navy Blue Cardigan, White Shirt, Blue Jeans, and a cute Tie Clip that adds a touch of sophistication.
  • It's a Dotted Navy Blue Tie and Chinos paired with a White Shirt that creates the perfect semi-casual look while balancing professional and relaxing vibes.
  • You can get a sharp, fitted look with this Skinny Dotted Tie, tailored Waistcoat, and White Shirt that gives off vintage vibes and is ideal for official as well as other formal settings.

Affordable watch thread for short men.

For us gents with modest incomes and for maybe those who have money, but don't want to spend a fortune (especially in this economy), which watch brands or specific models do you recommend?

A lot of people love to put down Invicta, but I love the design of many of their watches, and many can be had for under $200 (let's set that as the benchmark for "affordable").

So shorter gents, what's your favorite watch brand, and which models do you currently own, or recommend? I dress mostly "Dress casual", "Urban formal" and "Formal" if it helps.

Fall Guide To Proportionate Accessories For Shorter Men

When it comes to the time of the year that lets you show off your stylish self, there’s nothing quite like the fall season. As a shorter man, you probably think you will need to skip certain trends or accessories that don’t sit well with your height and stature. But the good news is that being stylish isn’t just for the tall.

In this guide, we aim to help you pick out shorter men’s accessories that aren’t just aesthetic additions to your wardrobe but let you get through fall in full swing. Let’s begin.

Why Accessories for Fall Matters for Shorter Men

When fall comes in, and you manage to revamp your wardrobe for outwear, you think that’s half the battle won. The other half of the battle depends on the accessories you choose to carry for the season. Unless you nail them, you can’t spend a fall in style and do your buzz-worthy outfits justice.

Hence, choosing the right fall accessories isn’t just another task on your to-do list; it’s a must to ensure your season is spent expressing your individual style. This gives you the self-assurance you deserve, making you feel more put together. So, the accessories you’ve probably been ignoring all along are the secrets to turning heads this fall!

Proportionate Accessories for Shorter Men

Did you know the average American height has been seeing a constant decline since the 1990s? Now, does the population getting shorter mean giving up on style? Absolutely not. Luckily, there’s a multitude of proportionate accessories fit for shorter men to let them style confidently. So, why not ensure your accessories amp up your look?

Let’s explore the best proportionate accessories for shorter men and watch how you can style them perfectly:

  1. Tech Laptops & Tablets

Let’s begin the list with the most treasured accessory: your personal gadgets. When considering smaller gadgets like laptops and tablets, you’re in luck. As you look through the market, you can find multiple alternatives packing the same tech power as their larger counterparts without looking oversized for shorter men.

Some top-of-the-line models that ensure you don’t sacrifice productivity or power for size include a 14-inch MacBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab A, and an iPad mini—all of which are ideal for short-heightened males.

  1. Briefcases

Depending on your stature, go for slim or smaller briefcases so they go well with your body without looking oversized. A good rule of thumb is to stick to a briefcase size of around 15 inches or shorter, but it’s best to buy one that goes well with your body. For instance, bags like Briggs & Riley Work-Brief and ESTARER Men’s Briefcase are some great bags to get your hands on.

Small briefcases like Samsonite Leather Slim Briefcase or 14-inch Leather Messenger Bag are fantastic options to carry during fall.

  1. Hats

For shorter men or those with small head sizes, hats make perfect accessories to elevate their outfit’s look. To maintain proportion, it’s best to choose hats with low profiles and small brims. An excellent idea is to measure your head before getting your hands on a hat to complete your outfit, and ideally, go for small-brim options.

A standout choice for small-headed hats includes the Flexfit Low Profile Garment Washed Cotton Cap. Or, you may also seek advice on Reddit or similar platforms for shorter men’s choice of hats.

  1. Smaller Wristwatches

In addition to gadgets, the next most important thing that reflects your personality is your wristwatch— so it’s essential to get it right. Opt for watches that are proportionate to your wrist size, ideally around 36mm in diameter.

Bonus tip? If you have a chain-link watch, remove the extra links so it doesn’t overwhelm your wrist or appear too big for it. Plus, note your wrist size and keep it in mind when buying watches.

  1. Ties

As soon as you get dressed up for a perfect fall day, double-check to see that your tie ends just above the belt line. Choosing shorter ties around 57 inches for men 5’6” and under is your best bet. Narrow ties work great for slim builds, whereas wider options are made especially for bigger, short guys. And oh, you might as well check Amazon for a wide range of shorter-tie collections

  1. Backpack

Finally, you can’t really get through fall in style without your backpack complimenting your outfit. Just like a slim wallet should be on your shortlist, a proportionate backpack shows people you can still carry a full-fledged fashion vibe, regardless of your height. Typically, dimensions around 15” to 18” in height and 10” to 14” in width work best for shorter men.

Smaller ties.

I made another post about finding smaller socks, but am now also wondering if there is a company out there that specializes in smaller ties like the ones you would find at Express.

Any suggestions?

Best places to find socks for smaller feet? (Size 7-9)

Almost all business and stylish socks come in size 8-12 which is frustrating if your feet are on the smaller side.

Any ideas on where to find smaller socks such as:

  • Business socks (for summer months) with stylish patterns
  • Business socks (for winter months) with stylish patterns
  • Wool boot socks to wear when making it through the snow

Grateful for any ideas.

Hats for small heads?

I'm not looking for "the kids section" as an answer. Where do I go for nice dress hats? Everywhere I go, the hats are too big for my head. Please help.

Watches for thinner wrists?

I have very thin wrists and cannot seem to find watch bands that disallow my watches to wiggle. Where can I find thin quality wristbands?

Furniture?

Do you guys look for specific furniture to buy to accommodate your height? I am not that short but for example prefer coffee tables a bit higher than normal and bureaus that are not so high so I can reach the top shelf. It usually means I look for wider drawers to make up the difference. What about you guys and where do you buy your furniture?

Ties?

Where do you get your ties from? Sounds silly but every tie I buy is too long because of my size.

Ties or Bows?

Random I know but I will be attending a formal event and I don't know if I should do a bow or a tie. I am not one to dress up often. Which is classier. It is a small wedding I am going to.
