Skinny Ties vs Normal Ties on shorter men.

For us shorter guys, I'm thinking, what looks better aesthetically?

Is there a general rule for this? Is it size related (i.e. height/weight), or more clothing type and event related?

What are your thoughts?

I personally stay away from "skinny". Narrow is the way to go if you're an adult IMO.

On a thin to athletic frame, narrow works and keeps things in proportion.

If you're a portly guy, a narrow tie will accent your heft, which may not be the look you'd want to go for.

Rule of thumb is, tie width should somewhat correlate to lapel width on a suit jacket.

Wider lapel, wider tie. Narrower lapel, narrower lapel.

Skinny ties are for the youthful punk crowd.

If you're over 25, it isn't particularly appropriate for dress casual or formal wear.

Narrow (2.5") is slightly wider than skinny. That should be as narrow as you'd go.

Normal width (3") is standard.

My preference is the narrow tie.

Anything wider than 3" and I feel like The Penguin from Batman.

The only time I'd wear a skinny tie, is open with jeans and maybe a white or blue dress shirt. Always in a casual situation, never with formal wear. The "punk" description is accurate. I don't think there is an "age limit" on this though. I think it would look best on a slim build however.

Narrow ties have always been my go-to.

The height, it is a “Genes” brand clothing almost impossible to find.

In this specific thread, I'm looking for style advice. What you're saying isn't style advice.

Narrow ties = modern, more fashionable, best on a lean frame.

Regular ties = corporate, traditional, best on an athletic frame.
